A slew of late fillings has created a full ballot in the race for Whitefish City Council.

Six candidates have filed for three council openings.

Incumbents Frank Sweeney and Richard Hildner are seeking to retain their spots.

Also running are Sarah Lundstrum, Katherine Williams, Barton Slaney and John Repke.

Mayor John Muhlfeld is running unopposed in his re-election bid.

Filing for city elections closed on July 2.

Councilor John Anderson’s term was set to expire at the end of the year, but he resigned from the position. Sarah Fitzgerald was appointed to fill his seat through the end of the year saying she would not seek re-election.

Both Lundstrum and Repke also applied to finish out Anderson’s term, but weren’t selected.

Hildner was first elected to council in 2011.

Sweeney was appointed to the council in 2009 before later losing his bid for re-election. He successfully earned a seat on council in the 2011 election.

Muhlfeld was first elected mayor in November 2011. He was appointed to city council in 2006 to fill a two-year vacancy and was elected in 2007 to a four-year term.

All of the council terms are volunteer positions held for four years.

City elections are Nov. 3 during the general election.
