Ceremony to honor Gary Young

COEUR d'ALENE - On Friday, Coeur d'Alene Mayor Steve Widmyer will honor Gary Young during a 4 p.m. ceremony in McEuen Park.
Young was a city planner in Post Falls before becoming the city's community development director. In 2007, he left public service and started a private practice as a consultant and landscape architect.
Young began Verdis, a planning and design firm, with his wife, Sandy. He worked at Verdis until he died on Jan. 10, 2015.
"Gary's roots ran deep in Coeur d'Alene," Sandy said in a press release. "The military took his family to other countries and states, but he and his family always returned to the Lake City to spend summers there."
An oak tree was recently planted alongside the Centennial Trail in memory of Young. A memorial stone, donated by the Panhandle Parks Foundation, was placed next to the tree.
The ceremony will take place near the McEuen Park playground, and the public is welcome to attend.
"Gary always found a way to give back to the community he loved so much," Sandy said in the release. "He served on CDA's 2030 Visioning Committee, Kootenai County's Citizens for Balance, and was a member and past President of the Post Falls Rotary Club."
