COURT: Devil's in the details
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 9 years, 6 months AGO
I read the opinion page from Sunday and the letter from Joan Harman.
1. Yes, President Obama had “only” two justices confirmed. But when you have a 5 to 4 vote you can see his liberal justice choices DID make a difference.
2. Yes, the judicial system is supposed to be an independent branch of the government but recent court decisions make it look like the court is not objective and is supporting Obama and special interests.
3. You say the recent SCOTUS decision did not invent any “rights.” It revised the Constitution and that should concern everyone! Nine unelected judges are not supposed to legislate and make everyone else in the country bow down to their opinion — that’s NOT how democracy works.
Re: Hobby Lobby — Yes, Joan, it is offensive that special interests were trying to force Hobby Lobby to pay for something that violated their religious beliefs. That company offers very good medical coverage that the employees should be thankful for, but instead they want to complain it’s not exactly what they want. I can think of many companies that didn’t give me exactly what I wanted in my benefits so I exercised my freedom to choose and either stayed or left. If you don’t like what they offer then work someplace else, but quit stomping on their freedoms because you don’t agree. They don’t owe anyone health care.
Joan, should your brothers and sisters in Christ who disagree with homosexual practice or abortion be allowed to exercise their religious beliefs without fear of being punished? Take your own advice — get right with God and let HIM make the judgment.
And by the way, did you notice that at the end of Obama’s Fourth of July address when presidents usually sign off with “God bless the USA” that he did not? He just said thanks and have a safe 4th.
