Ed joined the United States Marine Corps during World War II, serving from 1942 to 1946, seeing action in Guam, China and Iwo Jima.

After his honorable discharge, Ed came back to New York where he met and married his sweetheart, Caroline Bird, on April 3, 1948. There they had two children, and in 1957 moved to California where they welcomed two more children, making their family complete.

Ed had a long career as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic, eventually rising to the position of shop foreman for International Harvester and Murray's Diesel.

Ed and Carol retired to Dalton Gardens in 1988 where they indulged their love of gardening and travel. During their travels, Ed discovered a hidden talent and enjoyment in designing and working in stained glass. He made many items for family and friends which are treasured to this day.

He is survived by sons John Shipman (Kelly) of Battleground, Wash., and Kenneth Shipman of Vancouver, Wash., daughters Donna Wood (Mike) of Hayden, Idaho, and Kathrine Severt (Chris) of Gresham, Ore.; 19 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom love him and will miss him very much.

Family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Honor Flights, Wounded Warriors or your local American Legion.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, July 14, at English Funeral Chapel, 1133 N. Fourth Street in Coeur d'Alene. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d'Alene, with burial to follow at Forest Cemetery.
