Bayley one shot short of qualfying for U.S. Amateur

PULLMAN - Derek Bayley of Rathdrum was second alternate following Tuesday's 36-hole qualifier for the U.S. Amateur golf tournament.
Bayley, the former Lakeland High star who recently completed his freshman season at Washington State, shot 68-67-135, 5 under par at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
The three qualifiers were Aaron Whalen of Ephrata, Wash., who shot 65-66-131; Broc Johnson of Auburn, Wash., who shot 66-67-133; and Rylee Iacolucci of Cle Elum, Wash., who shot 67-67--134.
Iacolucci birdied the second hole of a playoff to beat Eric Ansett (68-66-134) of Spokane for the third qualifying spot.
The U.S. Amateur is scheduled for Aug. 17-23 at Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club.
Whalen, who won the Washington state 2A golf tournament this spring, has committed to play at WSU.
Whalen went 5-under on his final nine holes to earn his spot in the U.S. Amateur.
Johnson just completed his senior season on the Arizona State golf team, and Iacolucci just finished his senior season on the Idaho golf team.
