SANDPOINT — Firefighters made quick work of a fire that took hold in the Sand Creek watershed on Friday.

The fire stretched about 100 long and 50 feet wide before it was encircled.

“They were able to contain it pretty quickly,” said Schweitzer Fire District Chief Spencer Newton.

Firefighters from Schweitzer Fire, Selkirk Fire Rescue & EMS, the U.S. Forest Service and Idaho Department of Lands responded to the blaze, which started in a remote and densely forested section of the watershed.

The watershed provides drinking water for the city of Sandpoint for most of the year.
