SANDPOINT — One woman was killed and three others were injured in a series of collisions on U.S. Highway at the north end of the Long Bridge on Sunday.

Idaho State Police said Jacqualyn Decker was merging on the southbound lane of the highway when she used the northbound lane to pass other merging vehicles entering the highway.

Decker’s Toyota pickup truck crashed into an oncoming Subaru Legacy driven by Makayla Sundquist. Autumn Scarlett-Karlac then crashed her Nissan Versa into the back of Sundquist’s Subaru, state police said.

Decker, 44, of Sagle, was killed in the collision, according to ISP. Sundquist, 19, of Kootenai, was injured and taken to Kootenai Health in Coeur d’Alene.

Selkirk Fire Rescue & EMS Capt. Kevin Amorebieta said Sundquist had to be extricated from her vehicle and she was flown from the scene in a Life Flight Network helicopter, which used the highway as a landing zone.

“The passenger in that vehicle was backboarded and transported via ground unit,” said Amorebieta.

That passenger, Fumiko Tukimori, a 19-year-old from Japan, was injured and taken to Bonner General Health. Scarlett-Karlac, a 36-year-old from Seattle, was also injured and taken to BGH for treatment.

Sundquist was listed in fair condition on Monday, said Lisa Aitken, Kootenai Health’s community relations coordinator.

State police said Decker was not wearing a seat belt. Sundquist, Tukimori and Scarlett-Karlac were all wearing seat belts, according to ISP.

The 5:39 p.m. crash, which remains under investigation, blocked the highway for about two and a half hours.

Decker is the ninth person to die this year in a motor vehicle crash in Bonner County.
