Avery, Schulz lead team Montana at girls Junior America's Cup

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Kalispell’s Teigan Avery and Coral Schulz led the Montana team to a 17th place finish with strong final rounds on Thursday at the girls Junior America’s Cup at Cheyenne Country Club.
Avery, a senior at Glacier High and the two-time defending Class AA state champion, made a pair of birdies and seven pars in a final round 80 to finish in a tie for 50th at 28-over-par.
Schulz, a Whitefish senior and the defending Class A champion, finished with a similar round, shooting birdie on a pair of par 5s and carding an 81 to finish at 32-over-par in a tie for 54th.
Billings West’s Hayden Flohr was 33-over in 56th and Laurel’s Morgan O’Neill wound up 53-over in 66th.
Southern California’s Clare Legaspi closed with a 3-under-par 69 in the final round to overtake a pair of competitors and win the tournament at 1-under. She finished one stroke ahead of Hawaii’s Malia Nam, after the leader of the first two rounds went 2-over on the final day, and Mexico’s Isabella Fierro, who shot even par. Nam and Fierro tied for second at even par for the tournament.
Fierro and Mexico won the team tournament by seven strokes, finishing at 13-over-par to outpace Hawaii (plus 20) and Southern California (plus 27). All four Mexico golfers finished in the top 18.
The Montana team couldn’t make up ground in the final round, finishing 11 strokes back of Idaho in 17th at 93-over.
