Army commission

Aaron Horine, a 2007 graduate of Columbia Falls High School, has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army after successfully completing the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps program and graduating with a bachelor’s from the University of Montana. Horine will be branched to a specific corps in the Army to serve on active duty or in the Army National Guard or Army Reserve and attend an officer basic course relating to his occupational specialty or job. He will later complete advanced training by attending basic officer leadership courses. Horine is the son of John Horine, of Columbia Falls.

Dean’s list

The following Montana State University-Billings undergraduate students from Columbia Falls have been named to the Dean’s List — Lee Allen, Jinise Osborne 4.00 GPA and Danielle Rodgers 4.00 GPA.

Bachelor’s degree

Keri Potter, of Hungry Horse, graduated from George Fox University, in Newburg, Ore., in May with a bachelor’s in communication arts.

Dean’s list

McKenna Harvey of Columbia Falls was named to the Montana State University-Northern’s spring semester dean’s list. To be included, students must carry a minimum of 12 credits and earn a grade point average of 3.25 or better.

The following local students were named to teh 2015 spring semester President’s and Dean’s Honor Rolls at Montana State University: Columbia Falls — Breezy Adams, Joel Ballard, Caleb Baumann, Hope Burlage, Megan Crawford, Kallie Evans, Garrett Folks, James Grisez, Angela Hawman, Brenton Hemp, Meghan Jones, Kristopher Kenney, Melissa Livingston, Kayla Piquett and Michael Zenz; Coram — Hannah Bowerman, Isaac Rajkowski; Martin City — Michele Hagen; West Glacier — Sarah Metzger and Erin Ramsay with a 4.0 GPA.

Air Force

Air Force Airman William Brunz, a 2014 Columbia Falls High School graduate, recently graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, in San Antonio, Texas. He completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Brunz earned distinction as an honor graduate. He is the son of Andrea and William Brunz, of Columbia Falls.

Canyon bike trail meeting May 16

Bill requires verification before issuing driver's licenses

A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
