The Plains School gymnasium was filled to capacity recently as the Elementary School hosted its “Having Fun with Music Elementary Spring Concert.”

Before the music commenced, a special announcement was made by Superintendent Thom Chisholm. He read four school employees names who at the end of the school year will be retiring. Superintendent Chisholm said that collectively the four employees, Kathee Hojem, Principal Larry McDonald, Ruth Hamilton and Lorraine Hermiston, had worked for 126 years at the school.

To start off the evening’s music, the second graders sang two songs, “Down by the Bay,” and “Polka Time.”

Between every class’ musical rendition of a classic song, one to three sixth graders would step up to the side and play quick solo pieces in front of the assemblage, which flowed out onto the gymnasium floor.

In no particular order, the other grades, kindergarten through sixth grade, sang two or three songs.

Following the second grade, the fourth grade sang, “My Kazoo Fell on the Floor,” and “It’s Raining.”

The fifth grade sang a traditional Hebrew song called, “Zum Gali Gali,” and then it sang, “Mary’s Lamb,” and a collection of small group songs: “Day Break,” “Frere Jacques,” “Crown of Majesty,” “Camptown Races,” “Jungle Ritual,” “Long Long Ago,” and “Ode to Joy.”

In addition to singing, the fifth and sixth grade band played multiple pieces of music.

Next up was the first grade, which used hand motions and dancing during their musical pieces, singing The Wheels on the Bus,” “Three Little Buffaloes,” and If I Were a Little Frog.”

“Keep Your Paws,” and “Kindergarten Graduation (to the tune of Love and Marriage)” was the kindergarten number.

The fourth grade sang, “Follow my Rhythms,” and “John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt and Friends,” which people in the crowd could be seen singing along to under their breath.

The Sixth grade sang, “Polly Wolly Doodle,” “Skip to my Lou,” and “Clash of Warriors.”

The fifth sang, “In the Summer,” and “Rockin’ Robin.”

The fifth and sixth then sang “Footloose” together.

To finish, the sixth grade provided the crowd with a rendition of, “Jailhouse Rock,” and “When I’m Gone.”

Ms. Majerus, the music teacher, said, “It’s fun working with all different levels,” after the concert was over.

She said that all the classes learned all of their music in just about a month, and the sixth graders who played solos on their instruments all signed up on their own accord.

Majerus also noted that she will definetly be coming back next year to teach again.

Recca Madden, who had a solo in the sixth grade’s last song described her love of singing.

“I’ve been practicing with several types of my voice and I’m not actually singing my actual tone.”

She then said that she had been singing since she was four and that she loved singing.
