POST FALLS - A Spokane Valley woman was arrested for DUI Sunday night after allegedly drag-racing with two children in her car on a winding two-lane road and crashing into a parked car.
Shariah L. Whitney, 23, was arrested for DUI, reckless driving and possession of a controlled substance. She was also cited for an open container of alcohol, injury to a child and lack of insurance. The crash occurred at Spokane Street and West Riverview Drive around 7 p.m. south of the Spokane River bridge.
Witnesses told a Kootenai County Sheriff's Office deputy that two vehicles were drag racing when one vehicle lost control and struck a concrete island at the intersection. The vehicle crashed into a parked car in a resident's driveway.
The other driver, Curtis Whittekiend, 19, Greenacres, Wash., was cited for reckless driving and passed a field sobriety test. The KCSO believes the two suspects are acquaintances and had been at a gathering on Riverview Drive.
Witnesses estimate the two were racing at speeds between 60 and 80 mph in a 35 mph zone, KCSO Lt. Stu Miller said.
"Driving at that rate of speed on that road, they're very lucky that there were no injuries," Miller said.
Whitney told a deputy that she wasn't driving that fast.
Miller said one of the children in Whitney's vehicle was her 5-year-old daughter, who was in a back seat. The other child was a 15-year-old girl who rode in the front passenger seat and is not related to Whitney, Miller said.
"She admitted to driving in the oncoming lane of travel," Miller said. "She said that she was driving too fast, could not negotiate a curve and lost control of the vehicle."
The crash involving Whitney's Honda Civic knocked over two signs and caused four flat tires and heavy front-end damage.
"The car ended up stopping on a lawn," Miller said.
Miller said Whitney tested for more than twice the legal blood-alcohol content of .08. Marijuana and whiskey were found inside the vehicle.
Whitney's charges drew a combined bond of $3,600 and she was posting bond on Monday night to be released from jail, according to jail staff.
