Timberlake students win Emmy Awards
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 9 years, 8 months AGO
The class of 2015 at Timberlake High School in Spirit Lake includes three Emmy Award-winning students.
Timberlake seniors Katie Malloy, Justina Kalar and Shea Dretke each received Northwest Regional High School Emmy Awards. They received the awards Friday in Seattle from the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Malloy and Kalar won in the "general assignment-light news" category for their coverage of a young athlete from St. Maries who overcame diversity to score in a high school basketball game. Dretke won the sports Emmy for her coverage of Timberlake High School's girls basketball team. Timberlake junior Collen Cronnelly was nominated in the news category for her coverage of speed limits in Spirit Lake.
"I can't believe we finally won an Emmy, two of them," teacher Chris Jarstad said in a press release. "Tiger TV students work so hard to make each year better than the last. This year was amazing, I'm so proud of what these kids accomplished."
Jarstad said he encourages students to find interesting stories in the school and community and tell every story with enthusiasm and creativity. More in-depth reporting and improved camera techniques were priorities this year.
All four girls are part of the video production and broadcast journalism class at Timberlake. The class, nicknamed Tiger TV after the school's mascot, broadcasts the announcements live each morning. Tiger TV students also compete in the Broadcast News Team event sponsored by Business Professionals of America. Students from Tiger TV have placed in the top of the competition and qualified for the national competition for the past four years.
High school students from Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana and Alaska compete for High School Student Emmy Awards. Cronnelly, Dretke, Kalar and Malloy were the only students in the state of Idaho to be nominated this year.
