On May 14, 2015, Joann Stanley Rainey, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 83, after waging a seven-year battle with cancer. She passed while in the care of Hospice of North Idaho.

Joann was born on Dec. 21, 1931, to Louiseand Neal Stanley, in the town of Manhattan, Kan. The family, which included Joann and her older brother Donald, moved to Glendale, Calif., when she was 8 years old. Joann graduated from Hoover High School in Glendale.

Joann and Robert Johnson were married in 1954. Although the marriage didn't survive, it produced two children, son Keith, who resides in Post Falls, and daughter Jeanne, who resides in Santa Maria, Calif.

Joann and James Rainey were married in 1990 and moved to New Orleans, La. They stayed in New Orleans until hurricane Katrina devastated the area. They moved to Coeur d'Alene in 2006 and have resided there ever since.

Joann was an avid reader, usually having two or three books in progress at any one time. She loved to garden and was especially fond of "her pots" which were usually filled with color.

Joann loved dogs. Throughout her life she always had a dog, and that lucky dog was treated more like a child than a pet.

Joann is survived by her husband of 25 years, James Rainey; son Keith Johnson and daughter in-law Sue McDermott-Johnson; daughter Jeanne Lethbridge, son in-law Bruce Lethbridge, and granddaughters Kristin Lethbridge and Caitlin Lethbridge; brother Donald Stanley; brother-in-law Michael Rainey; and sister in-law Alice Sutton.

Joann will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a truly nice and empathetic person. The family is consoled by the fact that her suffering was short and is now at an end.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 12, at Forest Cemetery, 1001 N. Government Way, Coeur d'Alene.

The family has a request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her remembrance to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835.
