POST FALLS - At 276,000 miles, the 1982 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL that Timberlake High graduate Jackson Shaffer has been driving has had its day.

But now Shaffer has a new ride - a 2015 Chevy Sonic LT courtesy of Knudtsen Chevrolet - after he drew the key that opened the car's door during the dealership's community celebration on Wednesday night.

"My car's really old and parts are hard to find," said Shaffer, adding that the air conditioning no longer works in his Mercedes.

Shaffer was among the five graduates from local schools who became finalists to win the Chevy when their names were drawn at senior all-night parties. He was wide-eyed over his dark blue car valued at more than $19,000.

"It looks sleek," he said. "It's pretty life-changing because I won't have to pay for another car for 15 years. I'm glad it's an automatic because I have no clue how to drive a (stick). It looks amazing and I can't wait to show it off to my friends."

Shaffer, who plans to attend North Idaho College in the fall, was the last of the five students to draw a key. Three students tried their keys to see if they could unlock the car before Shaffer was deemed the lucky winner.

"I'll probably sell my old car and put the money I get from that into this one," he said. "It's awesome that they put this (student drawing) on. I didn't expect to win."

All five of the students were winners as the four others - Matthew Fremgen from Lake City, Colin Burkhalter from Lakeland, William Keillor from Post Falls and Megan Lambert from Coeur d'Alene - all won a MacBook Air computer valued at $1,000.

Eve Knudtsen, co-owner of Knudtsen Chevrolet, said the car giveaway is a way of thanking the community for its business and to support youth and education. This was the second giveaway for the dealership as Lake City's Griffin Winget won a Sonic LT last year.

"We want to be a big supporter of not only education but safe senior celebrations," Knudtsen said. "We partner with the parent associations to make sure students have a fun and safe party with their friends and have something nice before the next chapter of their lives."
