COEUR d'ALENE - The Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen put on an offensive clinic Wednesday night at Thorco Field, knocking out 19 hits and posting 13 runs.

The top of the Lumbermen (16-2, 4-0 North Idaho League) lineup led the charge as they beat the Northern Lakes Mountaineers 13-3 in six innings in North Idaho League play.

Leadoff hitter Stephen Vaudreuil went 5 for 5 with an RBI, No. 2 hitter Cody Garza went 3 for 5 with an RBI and No. 3 hitter Devin Kluss went 4 for 4 with four RBIs.

"Steve obviously sets the table at the top of the lineup and I love his approach as a leadoff hitter," Coeur d'Alene coach Zach Clanton said. "Devin is finally coming into his own."

Kluss drove in third baseman Parker Gabrielson - who hit a two-run home run earlier in the game - with a single to 10-run the Mountaineers (3-5, 0-2 North Idaho League) with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Elliott Sparks threw a complete game for the Lumbermen, allowing three hits and striking out one.

"After the first inning, he kind of got in cruise control, was really efficient with his pitches, got a couple quick innings," Clanton said. "When we got to the fifth I went to our pitching coach and told him this was his last inning.

Then all of a sudden he gets a double play ball, goes out for the sixth really quick. I asked him if he wanted to finish it. He didn't want to come out of the game and I have a soft spot for guys like that."

The Mountaineers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and added another run in the top of the second, but Sparks threw four scoreless innings from that point.

"That's a really good Lums team," Northern Lakes coach Pat Capone said. "That reminds me of back when I played, old school Lums, where we were just dropping like 90 home runs in a summer, like ridiculous stuff. Clanton's doing a great job."

Capone said Kris Jackson and Blake Wrotenbury will join Northern Lakes soon as they come back from playing baseball at Chemeketa Community College (Ore.). Capone said Jackson will start at shortstop and hit third and Wrotenbury will start in center field and hit second. He said both pitch also.

"We get them back for next week's games and then we'll finally for the first time have our full squad, so that's just kind of where we're at," Capone said. "We're fighting."

Coeur d'Alene tied the game at two in the bottom of the first and added two more in the second after Gabrielson's two-run home run to left-center field, giving the Lumbermen a 4-3 lead.

Kluss hit a two-RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, bringing home Vaudreuil and Garza. First baseman Dominic Conigliaro singled later in the inning to drive in Kluss.

Coeur d'Alene added more insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings, posting four runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth.

"This team's a lot better than any team I've ever been on in the summer," Kluss said. "Usually we can hit but this year we got everybody fielding, everybody hitting, everybody pitching."

Coeur d'Alene will play the Lewis-Clark Twins in a North Idaho League doubleheader Monday at 5 at Harris Field in Lewiston and Northern Lakes will play the Spokane Blue Devils in a doubleheader tonight starting at 5 at Shadle Park.
