For most baseball players, that dream of playing in the major leagues doesn't come true.

Two athletes from Coeur d'Alene High are just a few steps from realizing that dream, thanks to the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees on Wednesday.

With the 433rd overall pick in the 14th round, Baltimore selected Drew Turbin, who recently wrapped his college career at Dallas Baptist.

"It's been everything I've worked for since starting playing baseball in Coeur d'Alene," said Turbin, who was flying to Maryland to sign his rookie deal on Wednesday night. "Not knowing after the season if it was enough to keep that dream alive, or if you had a good enough season, it was a great feeling."

Turbin, a second baseman, was one of seven players from Dallas Baptist selected in the draft. Turbin finished the season with a .347 batting average as the Patriots' leadoff batter.

"It's just awesome to go as far as we did and see our successes and dreams keep going," Turbin said. "We had a few guys go that second day, but it was cool to see all your buddies going with you. I don't know much of anything right now, but I'll sign my contract and get to work."

After taking a brief nap following an early morning shift at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course, Michael Hicks received quite the wakeup call from the Yankees, who selected him in the 27th round, 833rd overall.

"It's just a huge honor and a blessing," Hicks said. "It's awesome."

Hicks has signed to continue his playing career at Yavapai Community College in Arizona. He added he'll weigh his options on whether to sign his pro deal, or attend college. Hicks finished his senior year at Coeur d'Alene with five home runs and 30 runs batted in.

"I've thought about it a lot the last couple of months," Hicks said. "Now that it has happened, I'm going to sit and weigh all my options."

Hicks will meet with a scout from the Yankees this weekend in Seattle to discuss his future.

"I don't know a whole lot right now," Hicks said. "But I get to wear pinstripes, and I think I can pull that off really well."

At first, Turbin didn't realize he'd been selected.

"I was just sitting here in my apartment hanging out with my roommate Daniel Salters (who was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 13th round, 394th overall)," Turbin said. "We were sitting around celebrating and being happy for him, and then I got a text that I was going to the Orioles. I wasn't even paying attention to it. Next thing I knew, I was on the phone with the Orioles' front office."

Baltimore has rookie league teams in Sarasota, Fla., as well as two in the Dominican Summer League. New York's rookie league team in Tampa, Fla., as well as two in the Dominican league.

"It's definitely something I've thought about, but don't know that this is real quite yet," Turbin said. "I'll meet with their scouts again and then it will be more of a reality. I really want to thank my parents and all the supporters back home, the football and baseball coaches, coach (Nick) Rook and my brother JJ for all they did for me. They paved the way for me and made sure I did everything correctly. It's been an awesome ride. Coming from a small town unlike some of my teammates, all the texts from the boosters and little league guys have been great. All the contact with the House boys, coach (Ron) Nelson and all the coaches showing their support has been great. It's cool to get to do this and make that dream happen. I'm super excited."

"They're two great kids that deserve all the success they're having," said Coeur d'Alene High baseball coach Nick Rook, who coached both Turbin and Hicks. "It's great for Viking baseball and the fraternity of the Viks."

Rook believed that Hicks could have went a little higher in the day on Wednesday.

"In talking to the scouts, I felt he'd get drafted a little higher," Rook said. "But in Round 12 to 22, it went pretty quickly. He's got an amazing work ethic and will do great wherever they put him."
