Free youth fishing derby in Rathdrum

RATHDRUM - A free fishing derby for youths between the ages of 3 and 12 will be held at Rathdrum City Park on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game will stock about 800 fish in Rathdrum Creek for the event.

Participants can register at the Rathdrum Parks and Recreation Department or at www.rathdrum.org.

Youths will be eligible to win prizes.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. Those who pre-register will receive a goodie bag. Those who register on Saturday will receive a goodie bag while supplies last.

For those who don't have fishing poles, Fish and Game will provide one. Volunteers will also staff a fish cleaning station for those who need assistance.

There will be a limit of two fish per child.

A farmers market will also be in the park during the event.

Q'emiln Park boat launch opens today

POST FALLS - The boat launch at Q'emiln Park will open today after the opening was delayed due to construction on the adjacent South Channel dam.

Construction equipment being used for the project was stored in the parking lot, but has been removed. Vehicles and trailers can now safely navigate the parking lot.

Parking fees at the boat launch go into effect today.

Avista Utilities officials say the dam project will finish late summer.

* Walking history tours planned in Coeur d'Alene

COEUR d'ALENE - This week, local historian Robert Singletary is conducting living history walking tours of old Fort Sherman and historic downtown Coeur d'Alene.

During the Fort Sherman tour, which goes through Sunday and departs from the Museum of North Idaho at 11 a.m., Singletary portrays General William Carlin - a commander at Fort Sherman.

At 1:30 p.m., Singletary will take on the persona of steamboat captain Peter Sorensen, a boat builder and community leader during the early years of Coeur d'Alene.

Tickets are $15 per person and are available at the Museum of North Idaho, located at 115 Northwest Blvd. in Coeur d'Alene. The ticket price includes admission to the museum and parking.
