Historic Snake Pit ready for summer

Ah, maybe to recognize the beginning of summer and Father's Day you'll head up the Coeur d'Alene River. An interesting stop could be at The Snake Pit at 1480 Coeur d'Alene River Road, Enaville.

With a full menu for all meals, new owner Tom Richards offers an interesting history for the place. Some sources claim it's Idaho's oldest restaurant and bar. Opening in 1880, it previously was Jodie's and the Clark Hotel with a questionable ill repute with the mining boom in the area. It's also called The Enaville Resort.

Now with outdoor recreation as the focus, the full menu is family oriented with daily specials including barbecue ribs, pulled pork and Rocky Mountain Oysters (venison testicles). General Manager Doug Johnson will offer a new menu in mid-summer, and it will change with seasonal specials.

A North Idaho native, Richards started in high school at the new Arby's in Coeur d'Alene and since has worked in England, San Diego, Hollywood, Seattle and Portland and was a teacher in Japan, Austria and Korea. He hopes to enhance and document the place's unique Western decor.

Johnson has 15 years in the restaurant industry in Coeur d'Alene and Spokane. He opened Fire Artisan Pizza here in 2011.

Hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Phone 682-3453. A website is under construction. It's "thesnakepitidaho" on Facebook.

PECU is now ICCU

Public Employees Credit Union is now merged into Idaho Central Credit Union at 1410 N. Government Way.

With 26 locations in Idaho, ICCU began in 1940 and has more than 197,000 members, 600 employees and $2 billion in assets. It is this year's winner of "Best Places to Work in Idaho." Local branch manager Emily Haas said positions are posted at www.iccu.com.

Weekday hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the lobby and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the drive-through. Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for both. Phone 667-7722.

Now for the Tidbits

- Watch for Harbor House in McEuen Park, Gaiwan Tea House, Pinot's Palette and Great Escapes Espresso II on Fourth Street and Coeur d'Alene Bike Co. on Third Street.

- Covered here last week, the correct website for LightWorks is www.lightworksproject.com.

- Several readers commented on my writing last week that I was entering my seventh decade. Wrong. It's the eighth - similar to the 2000s being the 21st Century. In the mail on June 12 I got one birthday card, a planning advisory letter from Yates Funeral Home (how'd they know?) and a life insurance advertisement. Sigh.

- North Idaho College now has a cuisine cart in front of the Student Union Building 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The SUB coffee shop is open inside until 12:30.

- A thief who stole a calendar got 12 months.
