COEUR d'ALENE - The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory on Thursday, as did the Kootenai County Emergency Management Department.

Tamie Eberhard, preparedness coordinator for the county, issued a press release warning people to be prepared for the upcoming heat wave by carrying emergency supplies in their cars and home.

"We are all familiar with floods and winter storms that threaten our area each year, but this year Kootenai County is experiencing unprecedented drought conditions due to lower than normal snow pack and abnormally warmer temperatures," she said. "The effects of these conditions impact water flow in our rivers and dryer than normal fuels, resulting in higher fire danger."

Eberhard said people should have enough food and water on hand to last for 72 hours. She said each person in the house should have at least one gallon of water per day and an additional gallon of water per pet.

"Everyone should keep an eye out for their neighbors and pets as well," she said, adding many homebound people may not have air conditioning and could need help as the temperatures rise. "We are experiencing unprecedented drought-like conditions."

She said the region is starting to realize the effects of the lack of snow last winter, and the lack of snowpack in the mountains.

She said streams and rivers are already seeing lower flows and the fire dangers are increasing.

The National Weather Service in Spokane issued a heat advisory starting at noon on Saturday and lasting until 11 p.m. Sunday, when temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees.

Lows will be in the high 60s and lower 70s.

"This heat wave will arrive just in time for the weekend," the release said. "If you plan to be active this weekend, be prepared for some of the hottest weather in the last few years. Drink plenty of water. If you are outdoors, take breaks from vigorous activity and rest in the shade."
