BOISE - Sometimes, you just tip your hat to the other team.

The Coeur d'Alene Sting under-18 girls soccer team's run through the US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals came to an end Friday morning, with a 4-0 loss to La Roca FC of Layton, Utah, in a quarterfinal matchup at the Simplot Soccer Complex.

"I could tell you that playing one more game and having one less day of rest was the difference, but really La Roca was the better team," Sting U18 girls coach Dan Hogan said. "They simply have more NCAA Division 1-level players than we have."

La Roca led 3-0 at halftime, then wrapped up the scoring early in the second half.

La Roca out-shot the Sting 24-6. Tiegan Horton had 12 saves for the Sting.

"Horton had a fantastic game in goal," Hogan said. "The score could have easily been 8-0 without her making so many great saves."

The Sting went 2-0-1 in group play Monday through Wednesday, becoming the second Sting team ever to win its group, and first since a Sting U19 boys team did the same in 2001.

"It was an amazing run and this group of girls played the best soccer of their lives so far," Hogan said.

First half - 1, LR, Eden Jacobsen, 30:00. 2, LR, Morgan Tatton, 36:00. 3, LR, Natalie Reynolds, 43:00. Second half - 4, LR, Averie Collins, 46:00.

Shots on goal - Sting 6, LR 24.

Saves - Sting, Tiegan Horton 12; LR, 2.
