Lumbermen sweep Prairie

POST FALLS - The Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen entered Monday's doubleheader against Prairie in need of some offensive rhythm. Coeur d'Alene had been held scoreless in its last 16 innings heading into Monday.
The Lumbermen (22-6, 6-2 North Idaho League) found their high-scoring offense Monday as they swept the Prairie Cardinals (6-22, 0-6 North Idaho League) in North Idaho League play at Post Falls High with scores of 13-7 and 9-6.
"I just told them to come out and play loose today and have some fun," Coeur d'Alene coach Zach Clanton said. "We had gotten to a point where obviously 16 innings into a scoreless drought, I'm starting to get crabby and they're starting to get crabby. Today we kind of got back to what makes us pretty dynamic and that's being up and goofy all the time.
It seems like that's kind of the story with all Lumbermen teams."
Coeur d'Alene and Prairie will continue league play today as the Lumbermen face the Lewis-Clark Twins at 5 p.m. at Thorco Field in Coeur d'Alene and the Cardinals play Northern Lakes at 3 p.m. at Post Falls High. Both games are doubleheaders.
"We basically told them if you want any shot at being the No. 1 seed in Districts we got to get a sweep tomorrow," Clanton said. "That's kind of always been the saying in all baseball is split on the road and sweep at home. Well, we got swept on the road so we got to get a sweep at home to give ourselves a chance."
On Monday, Coeur d'Alene got out of its offensive funk early in the first game as they put three runs on the board in the top of the first inning.
The Lumbermen led 13-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Prairie rallied with four runs in the sixth but the rally ultimately fell short.
In the second game, the Lumbermen jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after three innings. Prairie climbed back into the game again, cutting the lead to 8-6.
"Definitely a positive that we rallied," Prairie coach Brian Fowler said. "I mean it's good to show fight and that kind of thing."
Coeur d'Alene's Steve Vaudreuil went 5 for 9 on the day.
"I'm just going up there looking for a fastball to hit early in the count," Vaudreuil said. "I don't like to get too deep into the counts. I just like going up there and taking some hacks."
Vaudreuil said Coeur d'Alene needs to be aggressive at the plate today against Lewis-Clark.
"They (Lewis-Clark) have a lot better pitching than what we've usually seen this year, so we just have to go up there and be aggressive just like this (against Prairie)."
