Private fireworks displays in Whitefish may be banned this Fourth of July depending on the outcome of a special city council meeting tomorrow morning.

Mayor John Muhlfeld called for the meeting Tuesday asking council to consider enacting an emergency ordinance banning the discharge of fireworks inside city limits for up to 90 days.

The meeting is set for Wednesday, July 1 at 9 a.m. at City Hall. Public comment will be taken at the meeting.

The exception to the ban would likely be the professional display at City Beach on July 4, according to City Manager Chuck Stearns, because it is held over water and the city fire department is on hand during the event.

Information on the possible fireworks ban will be updated as soon as it is available at www.whitefishpilot.com.

With record heat and dry conditions persisting in the Flathead Valley, officials have asked residents to take extra precaution and consider attending organized events rather than lighting off their own fireworks.

Flathead County will enter Stage 1 fire restrictions beginning midnight Thursday along with an increase to “very high” fire danger. The restriction means that campfires are prohibited except in designated areas, such as fire rings at developed campgrounds.

Fireworks are normally allowed within city limits on July 3 and July 4 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Violation of the fireworks law carries a maximum fine of $500 and a minimum fine of $300.

Fireworks can be sold in the city July 2-4 from noon to 8 p.m.
