The Whitefish Education Foundation is hosting the Fractured Spelling Bee on Friday, March 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. at O’Shaughnessey Center.

A fundraising event for the foundation, this out of the ordinary Spelling Bee will feature seven local teams competing in three different categories.

Captains leading each of the teams include Bill Dial leading the Emergency Crew, Tim Murphy leading the State Farm Mountain-eers, Carrie Wick and the Teachers, Kerry Drown and the Principals, Doug Reed and the Restaurant-eurs, Jason Spring and the Hospital-ists, and Lin Akey and the Finance-ers.

Public participation to support a local team is encouraged as either teams or audience members may reach out with a funded “lifeline.”

In the first category each team will be challenged to write out their Spelling Bee word and use it in a sentence as appropriately as possible in the allotted time. The second category features local knowledge testing the team’s collective intelligence in answering questions on local history and lore, geography and regional facts. In the final “Smarter than a Fifth Grader” category teams will compete for points and elimination as they test their elementary school smarts in varied categories.

Each category will be scored for points, including creativity in answers, by a team of three local judges.

The nonprofit Whitefish Education Foundation works to directly benefit the local schools.
