Hawks come out flat

BOISE - A funny thing happens to a lot of North Idaho teams when they come to the state tournament. They blow a tire against teams from the south, as the Lakeland Hawks did in their 47-32 loss to the Mountain Home Tigers in the first round of the state 4A basketball tournament at Borah High School.

"This was not a typical showing for us," said a dejected Lakeland Coach Dave Stockwell after the game. It certainly was not the expected outcome for a team that was coming off a regional title.

The kind of shots that were on target during the regular season and district tournament suddenly were not dropping. The Hawks shot just over 16 percent from the field in the first half (3 for 18) and just over 24 percent (11 for 45) for the game. The seniors, who were so composed and confident during the season, suddenly were playing out of control and taking wild shots to the basket.

"We didn't have rhythm and we didn't shoot well," Stockwell said. "It's the state tournament. Sometimes you're the crook in the egg and sometimes you're laying it. Tonight, we laid it."

Senior guard Tyrel Derrick did his part for the Hawks, scoring 15 points and keeping his team to within five points after the third quarter. But Mountain Home, in winning its first state tournament game since 1980, had much more firepower, with three players in double figures. A big thorn to Lakeland's side was 6-10 center Jarek Schetzle, who was a hog inside - scoring 11 points and grabbing nine rebounds.

As badly as the Hawks played during the first half, they were down by only four points after the first quarter. But fouls caught up with them in the second, allowing the Tigers to take a 19-9 lead at the half. Lakeland made things interesting in the third quarter, but cold shooting hampered the Hawks the rest of the way. Mountain Home didn't help matters with its patient offense, sometimes employing the Dean Smith-style four-corners offense. A 22-point explosion in the fourth quarter put the game away for the Tigers.

Mountain Home advances the semifinals to take on Rigby at 7 p.m. (PST) in the winner's bracket, while Lakeland goes to the consolation round to play Burley at 2 p.m. (PST) in a loser out game.

Mountain Home 8 11 6 22 - 47

Lakeland 4 5 11 12 - 32

MOUNTAIN HOME - Wright 2, Smith 2, Egusquiza 6, Mekenzie 1, Park 10, Garretson 12, Riedel 3, Schetzle 11. Totals 13-32 16-18 47.

LAKELAND - Ram 0, Cooper 0, Derrick 15, Roth 0, Henry 4, Plunkett 7, Davis 0, Ray 6, Knight 0. Totals 11-45, 8-15, 32.

Paulette Jordan eyes run against Risch

There’s speculation, with perhaps some wishful thinking among Democrats, that former state Rep. Paulette Jordan will run for the U.S. Senate this year – giving Idahoans at least one competitive high-level race.
