Idaho State holds off Hill, Vandals

POCATELLO - There was bad news with Idaho's loss at Idaho State Saturday night -but there was good news, too.
Despite the 67-65 loss to their in-state rival, the Vandals still advance to the Big Sky Conference's post-season tournament next week at Missoula, Mont., and there is no taking away Connor Hill earning the all-time single-season mark 3-point goal record.
The Vandals take on co-champion Eastern Washington at Missoula Thursday in the tournament's first round.
Tipoff at the University of Montana's Dahlberg Arena is 10 a.m.
Hill made six 3s Saturday night to up his 2014-15 total to 102 - three better than Jeff Ledbetter's previous single season mark set in 2010-11. Hill has 334 career 3s.
As for Saturday's game at Pocatello - other than Hill's 3s - coach Don Verlin was at a loss for his team's stagnant offensive effort. Idaho shot just 34.5 percent from the field and 32 percent from 3-point range.
"We did a very poor job of attacking the zone," said Verlin after the Vandals wrapped up the regular season 13-16 overall and 8-10 in the conference. "That's not Vandal basketball. We just didn't get our ball movement tonight."
The Vandals did rally from a 13-point deficit with 5:38 to play. Hill started the rally with a 3, which was followed by a Jordan Scott jumper then two free throws by Arkadiy Mkrtychyan to cut ISU's leads to six with 3:29 to go. Jeffrey Solarin finally responded for the Bengals with a jumper with 2:58 to go to return the lead to eight, 66-58, with 2:58 to go.
Idaho State would score just one more point but the Vandals couldn't get any closer than two despite a flurry of activity in the final seconds - including the Vandals with an opportunity with less than one second to go.
"We executed the play we wanted," Verlin said. "Tough game tonight. ... We didn't convert a bunch of second-chance points tonight. I thought we had a heck of an effort tonight. We battled. Our guys stayed in it mentally.
"You have to give Idaho State credit. They played a whale of a game on senior night."
Hill finished with 21 points as the only Vandal in double figures. Mike Scott and Jordan Scott had eight each with Jordan Scott also collecting a team and career high 13 rebounds.
Chris Hansen scored 23 points, hitting five 3-pointers, for Idaho State (7-23, 4-14).
