Harris L. "Jack" Moorhead, Sr., Lt. Col. U.S. Air Force retired, Coeur d'Alene, passed away peacefully at home on March 5, 2015. He was born on December 5, 1923, in Tuttle, Idaho, to Harry and Ella (Erdmann) Moorhead.
Jack's family moved to Jerome, Idaho, in 1937 where he graduated from high school. In 1942 at age 19 he enlisted in the Army Air Corp and became a pilot. After receiving his flight wings, he entered World War II and was stationed in England where he flew B-17 Bomber missions over Europe.
After the war, Jack returned to civilian life in southern California, moving to active reserve status. There he met and married Grace Evelyn Cojerean and adopted her daughter, Cheryl. After operating a flying service and working as a draftsman, he returned to Jerome, driving with his father Harry and brother Marvin in the Moorhead Trucking business hauling livestock.
In 1951 Jack was recalled to active service from reserve status into the U.S. Air Force. During the Korean War, he flew B-29 bombers. He stayed in the Air Force after Korea flying B-47 bombers while stationed in Okinawa. In 1960, he was transferred to Castle AFB near Merced, California, where he became a B-52 Bomber instructor pilot. After 11 years at Castle AFB, he was transferred to Anderson AFB in Guam, where he served as Chief of the Command Post. After 2 years there, he spent 1 year in Thailand, then transferred to Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota near Rapid City for his last 2-1/2 years of service. He retired in 1977 as a Lieutenant Colonel after 33 years of active service.
Jack and Grace raised four children: daughter Cheryl, son Harris L. Jr. "Jack Jr.," daughter Wendy, and son Richard. After Grace passed away in April 1963, he raised his children as a single father for several years until marrying Erika "Ricki" Morse in 1970 while stationed at Castle AFB. They moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, after he retired.
Jack enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, square dancing and skeet shooting. He continued actively shooting until age 90, receiving multiple local and national awards. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Both he and Erika were charter members of Lutheran Church of the Master and Peace Lutheran Church.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Burton Richard, his first wife Grace, and his wife of 44 years, Erika. Erika's ashes will be interred with him. He is survived by his brother Marvin and wife Virginia of Wendell, Idaho; daughter Cheryl Cojerean of Albuquerque, New Mexico; son Jack Jr. and wife Connie of Apache Junction, Arizona; daughter Wendy and husband Kyle Mabe of Post Falls, Idaho; son Richard and wife Kimberly of Deer Park, Washington; grandchildren: Stephan, Skylar and Taryn Moorhead of Deer Park; Geoff (Elizabeth) Moorhead of Fairbanks, Alaska; Kyle (Lisa) Kimbrell of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Kevin (Joy) Kimbrell of Plano, Texas; Rod Sanchez and Anna Laura Sanchez of Apache Junction, Arizona; great-grandchildren: Rod Jr., Roman and River Sanchez of Apache Junction, Arizona; Kissindre, Kellyn and Kaleb Kimbrell of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Keegan and Aerin Kimbrell of Plano, Texas.
The family wishes to thank NW Oncology, CyberKnife, Hospice of North Idaho, and especially Peace Lutheran Church for their love, compassion, and support as well as all the casseroles and soups.
There will be a visitation on Tuesday, March 10th between 5 and 7 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home, 744 N. 4th St., Coeur d'Alene. Funeral service is Wednesday, March 11th, at 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 8134 N. Meyer Road, Post Falls, with reception immediately following. Graveside service with full military honors will be at 2 p.m. at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens, 7315 N. Government Way, Coeur d'Alene. Memorial gifts may be given to Peace Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Idaho.
