POST FALLS - On Wednesday, the Post Falls Police Department honored 14 of its volunteers during a breakfast at Hunter's Restaurant.

All volunteers were honored with framed certificates and plaques commemorating the milestones they have reached during their time serving the police department. The event was sponsored by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of the Area Agency on Aging of North Idaho.

"Representing the eyes and ears of local law enforcement, these proud men and women help to keep our neighborhoods safe," Bob Small, RSVP director, wrote in a news release. "Enhancing the effectiveness of sworn officers and administrative staff, these volunteers serve in many different capacities including patrolling our neighborhoods, assisting with traffic control at accident scenes, and assisting with data entries."

Small added that the 14 volunteers have amassed more than 52,651 hours of service, which he estimated is worth more than $1 million dollars in savings to the community.

"Their volunteer service equates to more than 25 years of full-time employment," Small wrote.

One volunteer in particular, Jack Jordan, joined what Small called "the prestigious 10,000 Hour Volunteer Service Club," and received special recognition for serving 13,871 hours with the Post Falls Police Department.

Small added that Jim Knepshield, Jackie Kirk, and Mary Button all joined the "5,000 Hour Volunteer Service Club." Carol Nettles and Gary Bohne were also honored for joining the "2,500 Hour Volunteer Service Club."

Another longtime volunteer, Jerry Spreen, was honored posthumously for volunteering 8,114 hours of service to Post Falls.

"Unfortunately, Jerry passed away on Feb. 13," Small wrote. "But we were honored by the presence of his widow, Sue, who has also been very active as an RSVP volunteer."

The Post Falls Police Department is in need of additional volunteers. Those interested in serving are encouraged to contact Lt. Curtis Exley at (208) 773-3517, or Small at (208) 667-3179 ext. 235.
