A perfect start for Viks, Burke in softball opener

SANDPOINT - Breana Burke threw a perfect game, striking out 11 and only allowing one ball to be put in play, and provided her own run support with a big day at the plate, leading the Coeur d'Alene Vikings to a 23-0 win over the Sandpoint Bulldogs in the nonleague for both on Thursday at Sandpoint Middle School.

Burke also had two doubles among her three hits, driving in three runs and scoring five from the leadoff spot. Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said Burke had all of her pitches working.

"She was throwing hard, but also changing speeds," said Bieber of his ace. "She's hitting her spots really well."

Coeur d'Alene hosts Ferris in a nonleague doubleheader on Wednesday.

SANDPOINT - Devin Kluss went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs as the Coeur d'Alene Vikings beat the Sandpoint Bulldogs in five innings in the season opener for both schools at War Memorial Field.

Michael Hicks also had two RBIs and Jonny Plum had two hits and three runs scored for Coeur d'Alene, which scored 12 runs in the final three innings to pull away.

Nick Holland had a two-run double in the fourth inning for Sandpoint.

Coeur d'Alene travels to Mead today.

Thompson, Allert earn MVP honors

MULLAN - Post Falls senior Dalton Thompson scored a game-high 34 points to earn Most Valuable Player honors, leading the East boys past the West 98-93 in the annual District 1 All-Star Game at the Mullan Pavilion.

Post Falls' Luke Anderson won the 3-point competition and A.J. Becktel of St. Maries won the Slam Dunk Contest at halftime of the boys game.
