SANDPOINT - An accused forger wanted by authorities in California was arrested by Sandpoint Police on Tuesday while attempting to access misappropriated funds at a local bank.
David Mark Gaynor was arrested for providing false information to law enforcement while being questioned at Columbia Bank. He was also wanted on a $100,000 warrant from San Diego County for unlawful use of identifying information, burglary and forgery.
The warrant was issued after Gaynor failed to appear in San Diego Superior Court last month, court records show.
Gaynor made an initial appearance in Bonner County Magistrate Court via video link to the jail. Judge Lori Meulenberg sustained Gaynor's $100,000 bail and added another $1,000 for the misdemeanor local offense, court records show.
Gaynor was arrested after authorities in San Bernardino County, Calif., contacted police here and advised he may be in the area. Court records indicate Gaynor is charged with three counts of using a forged instrument in San Bernardino County.
Gaynor, 52, allegedly deposited a large but unspecified sum of money under the name of David M. Carter at Columbia Bank using a check, the arrest report states. Bank officials advised Gaynor on Wednesday that the check cleared and he could pick up his financial transaction card.
Investigators told police here that deposited funds were proceeds from fraud committed in California.
Officers confronted Gaynor at the bank and he identified himself as Carter and presented an Ohio driver's license. Officers ran the license under the Carter name and it returned with a picture that bore no resemblance to Gaynor, the report said.
Officers pressed Gaynor on his true identity, but he would not relent and was arrested. An FBI analysis of his booking fingerprints positively identified him as Gaynor.
Gaynor's other aliases include David Anderson and David Fink, according to court records.
