COEUR d'ALENE - A little disappointed they missed out on state championships in the boys basketball tournament last weekend in Boise, Highland High's Stefan Gonzalez and Century's Malek Harwell - both Division I recruits from Pocatello - made it a goal to put on a show for the fans up north in the 12th annual North vs. South state high school all-star basketball games at Rolly Williams Court on Saturday.

Mission accomplished.

Harwell, who has signed to play at Boise State, scored 24 points to lead the South past the North 128-99 in the boys game.

Earlier, Maya Rodgers from Rocky Mountain of Meridian - who has signed at Division I Denver University - scored 13 points to lead the South girls past the North 78-65.

BOYS: Gonzalez, who has signed with Saint Mary's, also scored 24 points for the South, which hit 22 3-pointers in the game.

"We were both a little taken aback that we didn't get a state championship," the 6-foot-4 Harwell said. "So we wanted to come out and show them how good we are in the south."

Harwell was the runner-up in the slam dunk contest, losing to Telly Davenport from Bonneville of Idaho Falls, who finished with 13 points for the South.

"I'll let Telly have that one," Harwell said. "I'm all right with that. It was a fun game. We've been playing against each other all season, and it was a great time to get to play with them for once. It was a great time this weekend and I had a blast."

Colby Daniels of Coeur d'Alene and Dalton Thompson of Post Falls led the North with 17 points each.

"It was a lot of fun to play against guys with that kind of talent," Daniels said. "I thought we matched up well against those guys for a while, but I think we're a little out of shape from the end of the season and those guys have been working out because they're going to Division I schools."

Daniels hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 40-34 late in the first half, but it was all South from there.

"Playing against better competition is always fun," said Lakeland's Tyrel Derrick, who finished with 13 points for the North. "It's kind of like playing summer basketball and you go down and don't really know how they're going to play. You just go out and compete and see how it goes."

Highland coach Chris Frost, who was scheduled to coach the South boys, missed the game due to knee surgery. In his place were NIC assistant men's basketball coaches George Swanson and Jeff Johnson.

GIRLS: After having her high school season end prematurely due to an injury, there was no keeping Post Falls senior Sam Runkle from getting back on the court.

"It was really important because I knew it was going to be one of the last games I'd get to play with one of my high school teammates (Shayna Allert)," said Runkle, who led the North with 12 points. "We've been playing since we were toddlers on the court, so it meant a lot to me to be out there one last time with her."

Runkle missed the Trojans' final two games due to an ankle injury suffered in the 5A Region 1 championship game at Lewiston. Runkle was joined on the North squad by Lewiston's Lynzee Wilson and Cali Moscrip, who have committed to Whitworth and the Community Colleges of Spokane respectively.

"It's a whole different world," said Runkle of playing with the Lewiston players. "During the season, it's push and shove with us. But playing with them, it's a new environment and it's a lot better."

Runkle is weighing an offer to play soccer and basketball at the Community Colleges of Spokane next season, where another North teammate - Priest River's Katlyn Summers - has committed.

"I loved all the girls on my team," Runkle said. "They were super nice and knew how to play basketball."

Lake City's Natalie Wheelock had three points in her final high school basketball game before moving on to play soccer at Division II Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo.

"We didn't get the result we wanted, but my goal was to go out and have fun with the girls I've been competing against for the last four years," Wheelock said. "It was good to get to play with them and nice to see them as a teammate instead of a competitor."

For Rodgers, it was a chance to be coached by former Lake City standout and current Centennial High coach Cassie Bro, who coached the South girls to the win.

"It was awesome," Rodgers said. "It was great to get a new experience with coaching. I didn't like her that much when we were playing against her, but that was because they beat us a couple of times, but she's an awesome person and coach. It was an honor."
