You won't need a passport to experience the traditions, tastes and music of many nations and cultures this weekend in Coeur d'Alene.

Lakes Magnet Middle School's annual Multicultural Faire will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the school, 930 N. 15th St.

In its sixth year, the event provides a venue for community members to share their heritages and cultures with one another.

"It is also an opportunity for families to come and learn about other countries' traditions and taste various ethnic foods," said Lakes teacher Kristin Odenthal, who is in her second year of coordinating the fair.

The nations and cultures that will be represented on Saturday include Ireland, Norway, Germany, France, Israel, the Philippines, Mexico, Peru, the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, Scotland, Canada, Italy, New Zealand, Turkey and South Africa.

Odenthal said she has about 25 middle school students helping make posters and flags to decorate the gym. The students will be working at some of the activity tables during the fair.

"Learning about other countries and their cultures can not only give people a deeper understanding of their own culture, but can also broaden one's perspective and compassion toward others," Odenthal said.

Food will be available for purchase, including items from Cleo's Philippine Food and Uva's Italian Eats.

The entertainment lineup features bagpipers, marimba players, bluegrass, folk, Americana, Celtic music and more.

Admission is free and all are invited.
