New normal, new road to travel
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 9 years, 10 months AGO
When former Post Falls Chief of Police and County Clerk Cliff Hayes passed away unexpectedly in December 2013, it was a huge loss to the community.
For some of us, it was the loss of a good friend. For Jeanne Hayes, it was the loss of a husband with whom she had shared decades of life and five children. Cliff and Jeanne were such a big part of our community and now Jeanne's new normal is taking her down a new road - a road to the west. She's moving to western Washington to be nearer to daughters and grandchildren.
On Sunday, with much support from her children, Jeanne is holding an auction at their Post Falls home, the home where she and Cliff raised a family and made a life for more than three decades. While family friend Randy Wells will auction household furnishings, tools, camping gear and even many volumes of reference books and encyclopedias that her husband famously surrounded himself with, Jeanne said they're just things. The best and most important possessions she'll take with her are the wonderful memories of Cliff and their life in Post Falls.
The sale preview is at 10 a.m. and auction starts at 11 a.m. I'm sure Jeanne will feel the love from the community, and it will be cathartic to say goodbye to friends and neighbors as life begins again. From Seltice Way, go south on Ross Point Road to Maplewood, east a few blocks - follow the signs.
Delivering Meals on Wheels for a year or so a decade ago was one of my most meaningful personal participations. On Monday, I joined Mayor Ron Jacobson, fellow City Councilwoman Linda Wilhelm and Chief Scot Haug in service to seniors by participating in the March for Meals nationwide Community Champions, delivering Meals on Wheels for the Post Falls Senior Center. Its website is www.mowaa.org.
Often for these seniors, the meal is secondary to the human contact and safety check provided by the volunteers who drive the routes three days a week. On Monday, Linda, Ron and I accompanied longtime route driver Rena Hawley. Rena, nearing 80 years herself, has been running deliveries about 10 years with her husband, Dick. His health has declined in recent months but Rena continues to serve. She was an absolute delight as we visited with the meal recipients along her route. For some of those, receiving the meals is a matter of poverty. For others, age or illness is a challenge to preparing regular and nutritious meals. The goal is to bring public awareness to the very real need for more volunteers and the very real need for funding.
I hope if you're able, you will consider volunteering, even substitute drivers are needed. A few hours a week will make all the difference in the world to our senior neighbors. If you think you may not have the time, Rena is a great example of making time - she and her husband were honored in 2014 as Volunteers of the Year. Of the 8,760 hours we all have each year, the Hawleys volunteer at the senior center, food bank, community garden and their church for nearly a third of those hours!
With the rather anticlimactic first day of spring coming Friday, Lake City High School will host the Spring Craft Fair on Saturday to benefit the Senior Grad Night Party. The fair is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the high school. You can also support the Post Falls Senior Center Meals on Wheels program at the Gold Rush 2015 dinner dance from 5-10 p.m. on Saturday at the Greyhound Park and Event Center. Dance to the Rhythm Dawgs and enjoy a silent auction and raffle for some great trips. Tickets at Senior Center and at the door.
