Candidate deadline for May elections today
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 9 years, 10 months AGO
Time for candidates to get their names on the ballot for the May 19 election is running short.
The filing deadline is 5 p.m. today.
Coeur d'Alene School District Trustee Tom Hamilton, who was elected to the Zone 2 seat in 2011, said Thursday that he will not seek a second term. Hamilton made the announcement during the Reagan Republicans' weekly meeting. Hamilton's complete statement can be read at the following link on cdapress.com: http://bit.ly/1Fb6geI
Terri Seymour, also elected to the Coeur d'Alene school board in 2011, filed her candidate paperwork Thursday. She will seek another four years in the Zone 3 seat.
Casey Morrisroe of Hayden announced last month that he is running for the Zone 2 seat now held by Hamilton.
In Post Falls, school board incumbents Michelle Lippert in Zone 2, and Bonnie Beaulieu in Zone 3 have filed.
Lakeland School Board incumbents Kyle Olmstead, Zone 1 in the Spirit Lake and Twin Lakes areas; John Shaffer, Zone 2 in the Athol area; and Tim Skubitz, Zone 3 in the areas north of Hauser, Rathdrum and Hayden Lake have filed.
In St. Maries, Zone 3 incumbent Donny Masterson has filed for re-election. In Zone 4, Margie Gannon, the current board chair, is stepping down after 16 years. Sandy Kennelly has filed to replace Gannon. Archie McGregor, who currently serves in Zone 5, is moving from the district and will not seek re-election. No one has filed for that position.
Candidates must contact taxing districts for residency requirements.
Filing paperwork needs to be started and finalized at each taxing district office.
"County elections staff will verify voter signatures on the petition of candidacy," said Kootenai County Clerk Jim Brannon. "All these steps have to be completed by 5 p.m. to ensure a candidate's name is on the ballot."
Earlier this week, Brannon said few people had filed for a variety of positions opening up in the May 19 election.
Other taxing districts with leadership openings for the election include: Consolidated Free Library District, Eastside Highway District, Post Falls Highway District, Kootenai Joint School District, Alpine Meadows Water and Sewer, Dry Acres Water District, Hackney Water and Sewer District, Kingston-Cataldo Sewer District, Kootenai Hospital District, Lakes Highway District, Worley Highway District, Plummer/Worley Joint School District, Kellogg Joint School District, Bayview Water and Sewer District, Green Ferry Water and Sewer District, Harbor View Estates Water and Sewer and North Kootenai Water District.
"Voters appreciate choices when they cast their ballots," Brannon said.
