POST FALLS - Timberlake High isn't considered a small school at the 3A classification.

In Thursday's Christina Finney Relays at Post Falls High, it was a rare chance to get out as the pups and run with the big dogs of the 5A and 4A Inland Empire League.

And, prove they can stick with the big dogs any day.

Timberlake junior Jed Ward won the 110-meter hurdles in 17.01 seconds, with the next closest competitor finishing .18 seconds behind.

"The race felt good," Ward said. "I felt I could have done better."

Timberlake, thanks to its depth on both the boys and girls teams this season, could bring home a trophy from this year's state 3A meet at Middleton High on May 15-16. The Tigers are also scheduled to compete in the Pasco Invitational (April 18) and the District 1 all-star meet (April 30) at Post Falls High, where they'll be tested before districts and state.

"It's nice to get pushed by some of the larger schools," Ward said. "The smaller schools, there's not as much competition. These (higher classification) kids are faster and push me a little more. It's nice to get a chance to see some of these schools to make me work harder."

Lake City seniors Kyler Little (800- and 3,200-meter run) and Maddison Ward (100, 4x200 relay) paced the Timberwolves to the team title with a combined 265.5 points between the boys and girls team scoring in the coed event, where team scores were combined at the end of the meet.

Coeur d'Alene finished second with 223.5, followed by Timberlake in third with 184.5.

"The meet went really well and we had some great weather," said Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell, whose team finished fifth with 143 points. "There wasn't a bit of wind during the meet, and some kids put up some really good times."
