DIXON- In the eastern portion of Sanders County on the border with neighboring Lake County the National Bison Range is prepping for the busy summer season ahead.

An indicator that warm and sunny days aren’t too far in the future is the opening of the range’s summer drive, Red Sleep Drive, the scenic byway through the range, on Saturday, May 9.

Red Sleep Drive, a 19-mile loop through the refuge that climbs 2,000 feet offers stunning views of the Mission Mountains and chances to see wildlife including deer, elk, bison, pronghorns and bears.

May 9 is expected to be a busy day at the bison range as it is also the date to celebrate International Migratory Bird Day.

This year’s theme is “Restore Habitat, Restore Birds,” emphasizing the importance of habitat to bird species.

According to Pat Jamieson, who volunteers at the National Bison Range and used to work at the range as the Outdoor Recreation Planner, noted there are going be several opportunities for birders throughout the day.

Jamieson stated the backcountry birders, will meet at the visitor center’s parking lot at 8:30 a.m.

A beginning birders group will meet at 9 a.m. for a hike around the nature trail by the range’s day use area.

Additionally, at 5 p.m. a photography event will be held.

Birders interested in joining these groups are asked to call ahead to ensure the bison range can organize effective outings throughout the day.

Jamieson noted those who wanted to get out to the bison range and view the complex’s abundant wildlife did not have to wait until the opening of Red Sleep Drive to come on out.  

She stated the winter drive remains open and offers a wonderful opportunity to see bison in the spring.

“The winter drive is open for use and there are baby bison out there,” Jamieson said.
