COEUR d'ALENE - Coeur d'Alene school board candidate Terri Seymour said she plans to voluntarily report campaign contributions.

A new law, passed by the Legislature this year, will require school board candidates in districts with more than 500 students to start reporting their campaign contributions.

While that law does not go into effect until after this year's school board elections on May 19, Seymour wants to adhere to the spirit of the law.

"Ever since I have been on the school board, I have strived for transparency," she said, adding she has not talked with her opponent about doing the same.

"I haven't talked with her," she said. "I haven't even met her yet."

Tambra Pickford is challenging Seymour, who is the incumbent. She said she was not planning to disclose her contributions because the law doesn't go into effect until July 1.

"I haven't really thought about it," she said. "I haven't compiled any information on that, so I am not in a position to say one way or another until I read up on this."

Pickford said she has been spending her time researching other issues she will likely face if she is elected to the school board.

Seymour said she plans to submit her contributions to the Coeur d'Alene Press, and anyone else who wants the information, on a weekly basis.

She said although it's voluntary, she insisted that her reporting will be thorough and honest.

"I will be honest about it. I am a very honest person and I don't lie," she said. "I just want to be transparent."

Seymour and Pickford will debate at a forum on May 7, at 5:30 p.m., in the Community Room at the Coeur d'Alene Public Library.
