POST FALLS - With winds approaching 15 to 20 miles an hour at the start of the District 1 all-star meet at Post Falls High, it was important to have a strategy for how to turn that into an advantage on Thursday afternoon.

For Lake City junior Zack Holbrook, his plan in the boys 1,600-meter run worked like a charm.

Holbrook took the lead for good on the final lap, winning in 4 minutes, 41.71 seconds, a personal best.

"I thought it was a really good race," Holbrook said. "The guys that were in front of me did a good job of setting the pace. I thought it was a good race considering the wind was blowing right at us."

In an effort to combat the wind, Holbrook remained behind the lead pack, eventually passing in the final 200 meters for the win.

"With the wind, it's easier to have a strategy because it makes you want to stay behind people more," Holbrook said. "It makes the race seem a little slower, but it worked out well today."

For Post Falls freshman Melody Kempton - who won the girls high jump at 5 feet, 4 inches - that strong wind might have kept her from a school record of 5-6 in the high jump.

"I went up from 5-4 to 5-6, and just missed it," Kempton said. "It was really difficult today. It always seemed when I'd get ready to jump, the wind would blow right at you. It made it hard to get enough speed going to get over the bar."

Qualifying for the state track and field meets in all classifications is next weekend, with the 5A and 4A meets at Coeur d'Alene High on Thursday and at Lewiston next Friday.

"I'm really excited about it," Holbrook said. "I was happy with the way things went. Hopefully I can keep it going at regionals and qualify for state."

The 3A District 1 meet is next Thursday and Friday at Timberlake, the 2A District 1-2 meet is Friday at Lapwai, and the 1A District 1-2 meet is Friday and Saturday at Lapwai.

Coeur d'Alene senior Kaitlyn Gunnerson won the 100 hurdles in 15.17 and 300 hurdles in 45.45.

Timberlake junior Randy Duclos won in the open 100 and the 110 hurdles, Logan Feasline of St. Maries won the shot put and discus and Brian Skinner of Coeur d'Alene won the high jump and long jump.

Kellogg junior Jasmine James won in the long jump and triple jump.
