When Gary Hanson took ownership of the True Value Hardware store on U.S. 2 in Columbia Falls last August, the store’s entire inventory would have filled about three shelves.

It’s been a long journey back, but today the store is brimming with merchandise and customers to boot.

The store used to be part of a chain of True Value hardware stores owned by the Hanson family since 1974 under the Cardinal name. The family ran stores in Kalispell, Evergreen, Libby and Columbia Falls.

Hanson spent more than three decades in the family business, but he was gone for about eight years until he took sole ownership of the Columbia Falls store last year.

Today, the 25,000-square-foot store features everything one would expect from a large hardware store — and plenty of niche items, too.

It has areas for tools and power tools, paint, electrical and plumbing supplies, household goods, lawnmowers, pet supplies, farm and agricultural supplies, including chicken feed, recreational vehicle supplies, a full line of rental equipment and much more.

“I’m ecstatic about the feedback,” Hanson said. “People are happy we’re back. They don’t need to drive to Kalispell anymore.”

Hanson said he will continue to expand his lines, filling niches here and there.

“We’re expanding all over the place,” he said.

He also is holding the line of prices, something he can do by using the True Value buying power. His prices are often lower than the mega stores.

“My goal isn’t to raise prices,” he said.

His son Seth helps manage the store, and many of the longtime employees have returned. Joe, the friendliest German shepherd on four legs, also wanders the aisles. Hanson made a long-distance journey to rescue the dog from a shelter in California.

Bringing the store back has been a team effort.

“It’s been a huge project,” Hanson said. “I couldn’t have done it without the crew.”

Hanson’s Hardware will hold an open house from May 1-3, with lots of drawings and prizes, including a chance to win a gas grill and a free pig roast on May 2.
