ST. MARIES - Senior Casey Nelson pitched six shutout innings before departing, helping the St. Maries Lumberjacks beat the Orofino Maniacs 8-3 on Friday to capture the Central Idaho League title.

"I think this team felt like there was a very good chance to win league," St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. "To achieve that goal and now we get to reassess our goals and go for a district championship and our return trip to state."

Nelson allowed five hits, seven strikeouts and three walks over six innings. It was the second game he allowed no earned runs this season.

"It was pretty cool for him since it was our senior night before districts," Tefft said. "That was cool for Casey. "

Matt Smith went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Lumberjacks (10-5, 8-1).

St. Maries plays Kendrick on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Orofino in the 2A District 1-2 tournament.

ST. MARIES - The Maniacs took advantage of six straight walks in a 12-run first inning to beat the Lumberjacks in the Central Idaho League finale for both schools.

"We just couldn't get out of it," St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said. "It was a weird, emotional game with senior night and prom tomorrow. Orofino wasn't sure if they were going to come up because a student died last night (Thursday) and we were going to have a moment of silence before the game and honor her. It's just a game, and we couldn't get out of the first inning. We couldn't get our minds right, and there's really no reason we should have."

Orofino is 10-7, 7-2.

On Monday at Orofino High, St. Maries (11-5, 8-1 CIL) opens the 2A District 1-2 tournament against Grangeville at 2 p.m., followed by Orofino vs. Kendrick. The winners will play in the championship game at 6, with the loser moving to a play-in game next Saturday at Payette High.
