Gerald George McDevitt, 84, passed away on April 20, 2015, after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease.

He was born to the late Henry and Beatrice (nee Perras) McDevitt on April 23, 1930, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and was the oldest of three children. He was educated at Loyola High School and Sir George William College, also in Montreal, and during this time met his wife Gertrude (Valeriote) of 58 years in 1953. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Cochrane, in northeastern Ontario, to begin his life as a new husband and high school language teacher.

He and his wife and son immigrated to Fairfield, Calif., in 1960 where for the next 33 years he raised his family and taught English, French, Latin, and, in the latter years, special education at Fairfield and Armijo High Schools. In 1993, he and his wife moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to be near his daughter and her family. For the last 10 years of his life, Gerald was a resident of the Lacrosse Health and Rehabilitation Center in Coeur d'Alene, where he received tremendous love and care from their exceptional staff.

He was a kind and generous husband, father, and teacher, who was passionate about reading and hiking, and sharing those experiences and insights with his family and friends.

Gerald is survived by his son, Peter (wife Marlys), his daughter Valerie Kastens (husband Curtis), and his three grandchildren: Alex Kastens, Anna McDevitt, and Krista McDevitt. As well, he is survived by his sisters: Louise McDevitt and Marie Coupal, and many nieces and nephews. He will be acutely missed by all.

His remains are inurned next to his wife's in the St. Pius X Catholic Church columbarium in Coeur d'Alene.
