Call prompts school lockdown

POST FALLS - When Scott Thomas received a text from his wife Thursday that Ponderosa Elementary was locked down following a threatening call, he immediately drove to the school.
Thomas' wife, Meredith, was a substitute in the library and the two have three kids at the school.
"It scared the hell out of me, so I wanted to come down here," said Thomas while waiting in the school parking lot for police to clear the school. "I just don't feel right going back home."
The call prompted a 15-minute lockdown and police sweep of the school grounds and neighborhood.
"The call indicated that children were in harm's way and a weapon may have been involved, but nothing was substantiated," said Post Falls police Chief Scot Haug.
Haug said the call was broken up and it sounded as if the voice may have been from a recording. He declined to discuss specifically what was said, citing the investigation.
The call was made around 2:10 p.m. A school resource officer was immediately informed of the call. Police cleared the school around 2:50 p.m. before school ended.
After police searched the entire grounds, including inside the building, in and around staff vehicles and on rooftops, the lockdown was lifted.
"We've got to take all threats seriously and we did," Post Falls Superintendent Jerry Keane said.
An investigation continues. Haug said he didn't immediately know if the call was made with a cellphone or a land line, but police will attempt to find out the call's origin.
"I believe we'll be able to track that down," Haug said.
Police also responded to other Post Falls schools as a precaution.
Haug said he learned late Thursday afternoon that a similar call had also been made to a school in Bonner County.
