COEUR d’ALENE — Lake City senior Quinn Mitchell admitted his technique in the shot put had been a little off.
On Thursday afternoon, he was right on, walking away with the 5A Region 1 title in the shot put with a throw of 52 feet, 11 inches.
“I’ve been struggling a lot with getting my left foot to the toe board,” Mitchell said. “Today, I wanted to stay low and move as quick as I could, and it obviously paid off.”
Mitchell also won in the discus with a throw of 156-7, winning by 29 feet.
“I just tried to keep my left arm wrapped as good as I could,” Mitchell said. “I had some trouble throwing it there, but I’ll gladly take first place.”
Coeur d’Alene High hosted the opening day of the 5A and 4A Region 1 track and field meet. The teams travel to Vollmer Bowl in Lewiston today for the final day of competition, starting at 3 p.m.
Mitchell, who has signed to throw at the University of Idaho, plans to major in early childhood education and development.
“I’m very excited about it,” Mitchell said. “I know they’ve got a great throwing program down there. I get along great with the coaches and they’ve got what I want for schooling, so I hope to get a good education while getting to throw a little bit down there.”
Mitchell finished third at state in the discus as a junior, but did not place in the shot put.
“I think I’ve progressed a lot this year,” Mitchell said. “Just being a little stronger and getting the technique down. I’ve only been doing it for three years, but Bart Templeman (a nationally known throws coach who lives in the area) has really helped me along the way. I’ve got some things going well for me right now, and I don’t really want it to stop now.”
Post Falls freshman Melody Kempton won the high jump with a school record 5-6, topping the previous mark of 5-4 set by Michelle Schultz in 1990.
“Melody had a pretty good meet,” Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. “She was second in the triple jump (34-1), and just keeps getting better each time she does it. When she gets that figured out, she’ll only get better.”
The top three individuals and two relays in 5A advance to the state meet next Friday and Saturday at Dona Larsen Park in Boise. In 4A, the top two individuals and winning relays advance to state, also at Dona Larsen Park.
In the 4A meet, the Lakeland 4x200-meter relay team of David Moruzzi, Jeremy Frisk, Auston Henry and Chris Washburn won in 1:31.94.
“It was a good race,” Moruzzi said. “I’m tired right now, but it was a good race.”
The foursome also comprise the school’s 4x100 relay team, and Moruzzi, Frisk and Henry also run on the sprint medley team.
“We spend a lot of time working on our handoffs and practicing that,” Frisk said. “We almost have the same group of guys back as last year. All the time we’ve put in together, it helps that we’ve been on the same relay for the last two years.”
After the first day, Lake City leads the 5A boys team standings with 50 points, with Coeur d’Alene leading the girls with 56. In 4A, Sandpoint’s boys and Lakeland’s girls lead the team standings after nine events.
