COEUR d’ALENE — Prosecutors have filed an amended criminal complaint showing first-degree murder as the primary charge against the man who allegedly shot and killed Coeur d’Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore.
Jonathan Renfro, 26, of Rathdrum, was initially charged with first-degree attempted murder after the Tuesday morning shooting in a Coeur d’Alene neighborhood. But that was before Moore died later Tuesday.
Kootenai County prosecutors don’t have to prove premeditation in this case because Moore was a law enforcement officer acting in the course of his duties. Kootenai County Prosecutor Barry McHugh has declined to comment about the case.
Renfro “with malice aforethought, did unlawfully kill Gregory King Moore, a human being and a police officer, who was acting in the lawful discharge of his official duties as a police officer,” the amended criminal complaint document said.
Renfro, who is being held on $2 million bond, appeared by video in a Kootenai County courtroom Thursday for a brief hearing to continue a preliminary hearing that had been scheduled for May 15. A defense lawyer asked for 30 extra days beyond that date to receive discovery materials and prepare to meet the state’s evidence at the preliminary hearing.
Prosecutors didn’t object to the continuance and Magistrate James Stow granted the request.
The amended criminal complaint document shows Renfro remains charged with two counts of felony grand theft, a count of unlawful possession of a firearm because he has past felony convictions, and removing an officer’s firearm.
The additional charges stem from Renfro’s alleged theft of Moore’s patrol car and gun after the killing.
