MATTAWA - The administration and staff of Wahluke School District celebrated the unveiling of Wahluke Junior High School's five new murals with a mural march on a recently Friday afternoon.

WJH students have taken on the task of painting murals on Government Way buildings as part of the district's Makeover Mattawa project. More murals are expected next year, if not this summer.

District personnel and others who participated in the march started the afternoon with a scrumptious picnic of fajitas and the fixin's provided by the La Popular restaurant.

The Mural March started at Hund Memorial Park at about 1 p.m. It was escorted by the Mattawa Police Department and accompanied by the Wahluke High School Marching Band and community members.

It made five stops for the unveiling of murals at the U.S. Post Office, Mendoza's Market, Favela's Market, Estudillo's Market and the Shell service station.

Makeover Mattawa is a project to which the district has committed at least three years. The beautification will include wine barrel flower pots and benches along Government Way.

Meanwhile the City of Mattawa is in the process of planning a modernization of the same street, from High 243 to Boundary Ave. It has received a $50,000 planning grant from The Grant County Strategic Infrastructure Program.
