HAYDEN LAKE - Whether it was the wind, pin placements, or fast greens, Monday wasn't a good day for area schools in the state 5A high school golf tournament at Avondale Golf Club.
No excuses, though.
Led by Joseph Glenn, the Post Falls boys are sixth with a 328, trailing Rocky Mountain of Meridian, which leads the tournament with a 306.
"I know my boys did the best they could," Post Falls coach Maria Kostina said. "There's no excuses from them out there. There's been some mistakes, but knowing the attitude they have, there's still 18 holes left and there's plenty of golf to be played."
Glenn is 10th with a 77. Eagle's Josh Gliege leads with an even-par 71.
"It was a mentally challenging first day," Glenn said. "The wind played a little bit of a factor today. Overall, I played a solid round. I had a few mistakes, but I hit well."
Eagle has won the last four state boys titles dating back to 2011.
Ermias Mularski shot an 82 to pace the Lake City boys, who are ninth after the first day.
Highland of Pocatello leads the girls team race with a 345. Natalie Mullins of Eagle and Yedin Lui of Idaho Falls are tied for medalist at 81.
Coeur d'Alene junior Emily Callahan is 12 shots back with a 93.
"My 7-wood is really all that I hit," Callahan said. "My shots on the green were bad, and my tap-in shots were bad too."
Rocky Mountain, which won the girls title in 2013 and 2014, is sixth with a 391.
Coeur d'Alene is seventh with a 425, followed by Lewiston in eighth.
"You would think this being our home course it would help, but it didn't," said Coeur d'Alene senior Kendra Pasco, who shot 103. "It's a hard course. Every day we come out and play, you never really know what you're going to get when you shoot. The wind threw me off a little bit and the pin placements really threw me off today."
Ty Brearley, who is competing in his third straight state tournament for Post Falls, shot an 85 in the opening day.
"I was definitely a little nervous on the first tee," Brearley said. "After that, it was just golf, and I kind of put that away after that. I didn't think I played too bad. You've got to know that you're not going to win it on the first day and come back the next day and hope it's better. It's an advantage playing this course, but you can't miss on your shots. A few bad shots can punish you."
Kostina believes her team can turn it around in today's final round.
"We're just focused on the process," Kostina said. "You can't control if the ball goes in or not, only that shot. We've got to commit to it, see the shot we want to hit, and just go with it. It's a tough game, and you can have a bad round. Today, they all can sit there, pout, mope and feel bad. They've got a good mental approach instead of beating themselves up after it. We can't control if we win, but can control how we swing, approach and adapt to it. And the guys did a good job of that today."
"There were some tough pin placements and you can't win on the first day," said Post Falls junior Drew Harris, who shot 85. "We need to come out and play our best tomorrow. We were having a tough time putting, but we'll get here early and get the speed of the greens down and try to get better."
