The suspect in the March 17 armed robbery at Check 'n Go in Post Falls has been arrested - more than 1,700 miles from the crime scene.

Samuel Davis, 29, of Vienna, Mo., population 624, was arrested without incident in that city on Saturday by Post Falls detectives with the assistance of that town's sworn staff of two.

Post Falls Police Chief Scot Haug said a tip that an Idaho State Police dispatcher received and passed to his department helped crack the case.

Haug declined to say what specifically the tip was, citing the ongoing investigation.

"She (the dispatcher) thought the information may be very beneficial to the case and took the time to forward it to us," Haug said. "It turned out that it really helped."

According to the preliminary investigation, Haug said, it appears Davis was simply passing through Post Falls and needed money to get back home. It does not appear that he has any ties to this area, Haug said.

PFPD sent Capt. Greg McLean and Detective Neil Uhrig to Missouri to make the arrest, interview Davis, serve search warrants to process his home and vehicle and attend today's court appearance.

"We've been working on the investigation for the past two months and have a lot of evidence," said Haug, referring to why PFPD sent staff to Missouri. "The search warrants revealed good evidence and we wanted to ensure that the case proceeds correctly. Even though no one was hurt in the incident, this is a high-profile case for us."

Haug said it's common for police to send staff to other areas to make an arrest and investigate a case.

"Since our investigators have all the information, they know the questions to ask," he said. "We want to make sure that such serious crimes get investigated fully."

Haug said PFPD will seek reimbursement for his staff's traveling expenses.

"We're looking into how to best bring him back to Idaho to stand trial," said Haug, adding that the sheriff's office will be involved in that decision.

No formal charges have been filed, but Davis will likely be charged with robbery in Kootenai County, according to police. He is accused with pointing a handgun at an employee at the Check 'n Go across Cecil Road from the Walmart on Mullan Avenue and fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Surveillance video captured the incident and the vehicle allegedly driven by Davis. The suspect was wearing a black-hooded jacket, blue jeans, black gloves and white tennis shoes. He was wearing a ski mask over the lower part of his face.

The business was also robbed in March 2014. The suspect in that case was not caught and displayed a knife.

An investigation into last month's armed robbery at Northwest Title Loan near the state line in which the suspect pointed a shotgun at employees continues. Police don't believe there's any connection between that incident and the one at Check 'n Go.
