POST FALLS — Neither Preston Roth nor his Lakeland High boys golf team were able to hold on to their first-day leads, but both had a lot to smile about at the conclusion of the state 4A golf tournament Tuesday at The Links.

Roth, a senior, finished fourth in the boys medalist competition for his first medal in two trips to state.

And the Lakeland boys finished fourth in a playoff, bringing home a trophy for the first time in school history.

“I didn’t think I would place in the top 10 for sure,” said Roth, who held a one-shot lead after a 1-under-par 72 in Monday’s first round, then shot 75 on a rainy second day to finish four strokes behind the winner. “I didn’t make it to state last year, so coming to state was definitely an honor and a privilege to play with these guys out here. Taking fourth was something special, yeah.”

“I think Preston did a great job out there,” Mario Maddy said. “He’s playing a kid that has colleges looking at him. And Preston right now didn’t have many people looking at him. The kid’s a gamer; he gets out and he competes hard, and he just came up a little bit short today.”

Lakeland shot 306 on Monday and led by three shots over Twin Falls. But the Bruins shot 302 on Tuesday for a 611, while the Hawks shot 311 for a 617. Bishop Kelly shot 295 on Tuesday — a one-day improvement of 23 shots — to finish just two shots behind Twin Falls.

“The kids played in tough conditions, but you’ve got to give it to Twin Falls and those other teams — they made some good shots when they needed to make good shots,” Maddy said. “Those kids were making nice-looking putts to save pars, and we just didn’t make the shots when we needed to make the shots. But for going out there and competing, I’m real proud of the kids. From first to fourth was six strokes — that’s pretty dang close.”

Bishop Kelly junior Hunter Ostrom, playing in the final group as well, shot a 4-under-par 69, capped by an eagle on their final hole, the 640-yard par-6 ninth, to win by three shots over junior Preston Nelson of Twin Falls.

Roth and junior Brady Nelson of Twin Falls each finished at 1-over 147, but Nelson took third in the tiebreaker — head-to-head scores on each hole, starting with the toughest hole.

Lakeland and Skyview of Nampa each shot 617, but Skyview won on the second hole of a playoff for third place.

Twin Falls won its fifth straight state 4A boys title, and fourth under coach Steve Meyerhoeffer.

“My (No.) 3, 4 and 5 kids, freshman, freshman and sophomore, I knew if two of the three had a decent day, we had a very good chance,” Meyerhoeffer said. “One (freshman Drew Meyerhoeffer, the coach’s nephew) shoots 76, one (sophomore Zach Malina) shoots 79.”

Bishop Kelly trailed Lakeland by 12 strokes and Twin by nine after the first day.

“I heard a (BK) kid holed out from 200 yards, a kid made three straight birdies, so I knew they were making a run at us,” Steve Meyerhoeffer said. “And they’ve got the best player in the state (Ostrom). We just hung on by the skin of our teeth.”

Twin Falls will return its top eight players next season — its five at state consisted of two juniors, a sophomore and two freshmen.

Ostrom, who is drawing recruiting interest from several Pac-12 schools, as well as Notre Dame and Minnesota, played in the final group with Roth, Preston Nelson of Twin Falls and Camren Gaschler of Skyview.

Ostrom shot 34 on his front nine and was tied with Nelson at the turn. Roth shot 38 and was two shots back.

Ostrom birdied his 10th hole (the par-4 hole No. 1) from 2 feet for a one-shot lead, and he never relinquished his lead. He increased his lead to two with a par on the par-3 eighth as Nelson bogeyed. Nelson birdied the final hole after Ostrom eagled.

“I had a 65 in mind (for Tuesday) — that was my number, as soon as I left the course (Monday). I knew that was the number that would get us back into the tournament — it actually would have got us the win. It was looking good throughout the day, but a couple three-putts got me down.”

It was Ostrom’s second individual title in three seasons. He was second last year to Derek Bayley of Lakeland, who played this year as a freshman at Washington State. It was BK’s third straight runner-up finish at state.

Roth was even par on the back, birdieing the final hole after bogeying No. 8.

“I hung in there for a while,” Roth said. “I started off par-eagle, I chipped in on 11 (the boys started on the back nine on Tuesday, and finished on the front). But then I had a couple bad holes and I couldn’t bounce back. I missed a lot of 10-foot birdie putts and that was just a bummer.”

Roth has spoken to Community Colleges of Spokane, and Carroll College, about playing after high school.

“Being in the final group was definitely pressure, especially leading,” Roth said. “I felt like I needed to make a bunch of pars, but I needed to make a lot more birdies, I guess.”

Middleton won the 4A girls state title with a 722, 13 shots better than Twin Falls. Kinsley Bonfilio of Bishop Kelly, who has signed with Boise State, shot a 6-over 152 to win girls medalist honors by seven shots.

Lakeland finished fifth, 27 shots out of fourth, missing a trophy by one place.

“I’m proud of my girls. Last year, we go down there (to state), and we get blown off the map,” Maddy said.

Lakeland senior Haley Rotchford bounced back from a rough first day to shoot 84 on Tuesday, finished eighth in a card-off and brought home a medal.

“It’s pretty hard to walk away from shooting 100 and come back the next day and shoot (84),” Maddy said. “Being the competitor that she is, she went out there, she let yesterday go by, and she went out today and competed and she got that medal.”
