Kootenai Humane Society takes precautions against distemper

The Kootenai Humane Society has temporarily closed its dog adoption wings as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of canine distemper.

Three dogs tested positive for the disease on Friday but are doing well. All dogs at the shelter have been vaccinated against the disease.

Kittens and cats are not affected by canine distemper and are available for adoption. They can be seen during normal business hours.

No dogs have died from the disease. However, KHS staff, under the direction of specialists, will continue to monitor the animals and will continue to test for the next several weeks.

As the dog's tests are cleared by the specialists, they will become available for adoption. Please visit the Kootenai Humane Society website, http://www.kootenaihumanesociety.com for further updates.

For more information, contact Debbie Jeffrey at (208) 449-3412.
