Flathead Electric Cooperative is asking its members to be cautious following multiple reports of a possible phone scam.

According to a news release from the utility, members reported receiving phone calls from people posing as Flathead Electric employees. The caller may say that the member has a past-due account and threaten to shut off services without immediate payment.

The caller then may ask for information such as Social Security numbers, credit card information or utility account numbers.

Flathead Electric Cooperative’s policy is not to threaten to cut off service immediately due to an outstanding account balance. The utility “follows a comprehensive series of procedures” in dealing with late accounts, according to the press release.

Flathead Electric employees do make periodic “courtesy calls,” according to the company.

Members who believe they are receiving these calls are urged to hang up and call Flathead Electric directly, as well as contacting law enforcement.

The official Flathead Electric Cooperative phone number is 751-1820 for the Kalispell office and 293-7122 for the Libby office.
