Child sex abuse case expanding

SANDPOINT - A Bonner County child sex abuse case is deepening and widening.
Adam Michael Pugh was arrested earlier this month on a charge of lewd and lascivious conduct for allegedly carrying on a sexual relationship with an underage girl over a four-year period.
Pugh was free on $100,000 bond until he was arrested again on Wednesday and charged with seven counts of producing and possessing sexually exploitative materials for taking photos of the teen naked and engaged in sex acts in 2012.
Pugh's former wife, Kathryn Leanne Howard, was also arrested on Wednesday and charged with one count of lewd conduct and five counts of producing and possessing exploitative materials.
All of the criminal charges involve a girl who is now 17 years old. Pugh is accused of having sexual contact with the girl from 2009 to 2013, when she was between the ages of 12 and 16. Howard is accused of having sexual contact with the alleged victim in 2012 when she was 15.
The illicit photos were taken when she was 14-15 years old, according to court documents. Both Pugh and Howard are allegedly in the photos with the teen.
The additional charges against Pugh and the charges against Howard after Pugh's phone and computer were searched pursuant to a warrant, court records show.
Pugh, 33, and Howard, 34, made initial appearances in Bonner County Magistrate Court on Thursday via video link from the county jail. Judge Debra Heise set Howard's bail at $60,000 and Pugh's bail at $350,000.
Heise entered orders forbidding Pugh and Howard from having contact with the alleged victim. A public defender was appointed to represent Howard but Pugh declined those services and already has private counsel representing him on the original lewd conduct charge.
Preliminary hearings in the cases are pending.
The criminal investigation expanded amid allegations that Pugh had a habit of showing coworkers photos of his sex partners when he worked as a emergency medical technician at Bonner County EMS.
Pugh worked for the department from 2005 to 2009 and from 2010 to 2013, according to Cindy Binkerd, Bonner County's director of Human Resources & Risk management.
The charges against Pugh have emerged in the debate surrounding Bonner County's decision to cancel its contract with the Sagle Fire District and expand its own operations in that area. The fire departments in Sagle and Sandpoint operate jointly as Selkirk Fire Rescue & EMS.
Glen Cassidy, a Sagle resident and a Sandpoint Fire lieutenant, urged county commissioners on Tuesday to have an independent investigation of the department conducted.
"I'm just trusting that my officials will do the right thing and take care of the matter so that I can know my family is safe," said Cassidy.
